Xiaomi 17 Ultra: The Smartphone That Made Me Pick Up My Camera Again
It has been a long time since Xiaomi sent us a phone to try. When this one arrived, I was curious but not expecting much. I know that many high-end phones are really good at doing almost everything. Then I started using the Xiaomi 17 Ultra. Something surprising happened— I began taking pictures with my phone because I actually wanted to take photos, not just because I had to.
It might not seem like a lot, but it means a lot to me. I’ve spent many years carrying cameras, lenses, and other gear everywhere. I always reach for a real camera when I want to take serious photos. But the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is the first phone in a long time that made me stop and look at my pictures, and think, “I don’t really need my camera for this.”.
This phone is designed to focus on taking good pictures with its camera.
The main reason I get excited is because of the camera parts.
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra has a big 50MP camera sensor that is about the size of a one-inch square. It also has special lenses made by Leica called Summilux. The large sensor helps the camera take better pictures by capturing more details, keeping bright parts from getting too bright, and showing different shades of colors. When you take pictures in bright sunlight, it keeps the bright parts from getting too shiny. When you take pictures of dark places, it still shows details instead of turning everything black. At night, it can gather a lot of light and show more details than you might expect.
Xiaomi’s camera is really good at making pictures look nice. The special computer tricks help it handle tricky things like bright and dark areas, tough lighting, and different colors. The pictures look so good that they don’t seem like they were taken with a phone, which is very impressive.
And then there is the telephoto, with depth
The main camera is just one part of the picture. The 200MP telephoto camera is also really cool because it lets you see things from a different angle, not just because there’s another camera on the back. For someone who takes pictures of cars, bikes, and people, having a good telephoto camera on a phone is very helpful.
You can make a scene look smaller or bigger, focus on a person or object, and see things from a special angle that the main camera can’t do. Since the phone’s telephoto lens is big, your pictures stay clear even if you move around. The phone also has special color settings and modes that help you make your pictures look just right. Because of this, I found myself planning my photos carefully instead of just snapping quick pictures.
The Photography Kit changes everything
The camera system caught my attention first, but the Photography Kit made me realize this phone can really help me be creative.
The kit gives the phone a special camera handle with buttons. It has a shutter button to take pictures, a half-press button to focus, zoom buttons, and a button to start recording videos. The handle also has a 2,000mAh battery inside, so your phone can have more power while you’re filming or taking photos.
The part I find most helpful is the 67mm filter adapter. I quickly attached a CPL and ND filter to it.
When taking pictures of cars, you need special tools because cars are like big shiny mirrors. The paint, glass, and chrome parts reflect light all over. Using a special filter called a CPL on the phone helps control these reflections, making car pictures much easier to take.
The ND filter is very helpful when you are filming outside because it helps you control how bright the picture is and how fast the camera’s shutter moves. It’s like having a small camera kit that can easily fit in your pocket.
It made me rethink carrying a camera
The biggest compliment I can give to the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is that it’s almost like a real camera. I used to tell people they should buy a real camera if they want really good pictures. I still think that, but now the phone takes pictures that are almost just as good.
I didn’t think I could go outside with just this phone, a Photography Kit, a CPL, and an ND filter and take pictures good enough to use professionally. It also makes you think differently about how to take photos and shows you many new filter options. The choices are endless. When you carry a big camera, you decide to go take pictures. But with this, the camera is already in your hand, so you can take pictures anytime.
If you see something cool, take out your phone and take a picture. Since phones take really nice photos, it doesn’t feel like you’re giving up anything just because you didn’t bring your camera.
Shooting Video is gets even more interesting
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra is not only a great camera for taking pictures. It can also record video in really high quality, like 8K. But what’s more exciting is that it can shoot 4K videos at 120 frames per second, which makes the video look super smooth. This isn’t just something written on a list of features—because of its big sensors, good lenses, powerful processing, and stabilisation, the videos you make with it look professional and usable for important projects.
There is a special way to record videos called 4K 120fps LOG, which helps people who want to make their videos look really good. This is especially helpful for car videos. You can film a moving car, then make it slow down without losing details, and change how it looks later on. It’s amazing because all this powerful stuff fits inside a tiny device you can hold in your hand. A few years ago, you would need a big, expensive camera to do this, but now it fits in your pocket.
Xiaomi has gone a step ahead
One big problem with really good smartphone cameras is that they get hot. Even if the camera has a great sensor, sharp lenses, and smart processing, it can stop working well if the phone gets too warm after taking lots of pictures or videos. When it gets hot, the pictures can shake or be blurry. Xiaomi has fixed this by adding a special cooling system just for the camera, which is the first time anyone has done this. This is very helpful when you record long videos in high quality or fast motion.
I’ve used the phone outside in tough conditions and for a long time. It gets warm when I use it a lot, but it still works well as a camera. That’s really important.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor makes the phone very powerful. It works quickly and smoothly during everyday use. I also played big, fancy games on it, and the game speed and how fast it responded were amazing. When playing very demanding games, the phone can get a bit warm, but that’s normal because it’s doing a lot of work inside such a small device.
The display is as good as a prograde display
Xiaomi made the screen really amazing, especially for people who like taking pictures. It has a super clear 2K AMOLED display that refreshes 120 times every second, shows a lot of colors, and can get very bright—up to 3,500 nits. The Pro color mode helps make the colors very accurate, which is great for editing photos and videos. The screen is very bright, colorful, and super sharp, making everything look exciting and clear.
But there’s a small catch. You can’t change the screen’s sharpness like some other phones do. The screen always stays at the same clarity, and you can’t pick different clarity levels. But who complains if you have a bigger battery to last longer, and why lower the screen quality just to save power and keep the camera from getting too hot? Most features and safety things are taken care of almost everywhere.
The battery is massive
The phone has a big battery that holds 6,000mAh of power. It can be charged quickly with 90W wired HyperCharge or 50W wireless charging. The battery lasts a long time, even when using the camera, videos, and other tasks. I didn’t need to charge it for many days in a row, which is really good for a phone in 2026.
If you use the Photography Kit, the extra 2,000mAh battery in the grip helps a lot. It means you can take pictures for a long time without worrying about your phone’s battery running out. The grip works like a camera part, a portable charger, and a way to hold and control the phone all at once. Every feature is easy to understand and helpful.
It is built like a flagship
The phone has Xiaomi Shield Glass 3.4 on it, and I have been using the phone without a case for the past two months.
It has lasted a long time even with lots of use. What’s really amazing is that even with a big camera and complicated parts inside, Xiaomi made it so the phone is protected from water and dust with IP66, IP68, and IP69 ratings.
This makes you feel more sure about the device, even though it has a very complicated camera. It also has good GPS that uses different systems, strong Wi-Fi, and precise location tools. This is really helpful when you’re traveling or taking photos outside, especially in mountains or hard-to-get places. I’ve used this phone in tough places and rough conditions where I wouldn’t want to hurt an expensive phone. It has handled everything I’ve done to it very well.
HyperOS is still the weak link
Now I need to make things a little less exciting.
The hardware and camera are really great, and it has a lot of power to work fast. But the HyperOS software still isn’t perfect. It doesn’t feel as smooth and easy to use as some other phones. There is also some extra stuff that isn’t needed, called bloatware. Even though Xiaomi’s system is getting bigger and more complete, using the phone still doesn’t feel as neat and simple as it should for how much it costs.
Xiaomi 17 Ultra Hyper AI has some cool features like smart picture editing, talking to the device, changing wallpapers automatically, and other smart tools.
I really liked the moving pictures on the screen.
For me, the software is the only part where Xiaomi needs to improve. When the hardware is this great, the software shouldn’t be the reason it doesn’t work better.
The case problem
I have a problem I didn’t think of before. I like to keep my phones safe. When I carry a phone that costs about 1.4 lakh rupees, I want a strong, tough case like those used by soldiers so I can trust it when I am traveling or working outside.
Sadly, there aren’t many choices for cases in India.
You have a few options, but they don’t look very good and don’t match the big camera on the phone very well. Since this phone is made to be a serious camera, I wish Xiaomi had more protective cases and accessories available in India to go with it.
The audio is surprisingly good
The phone can record sound with deep bass and a V-shaped sound, which means the bass and treble are strong. For everyday recording and making videos, the microphones work really well. This shows that the phone is more than just a regular phone; it’s also a great tool for creating content. When I used it with my earphones and special sound device, the sound was amazing.
